A week's long young women's retreat for Shifting the Power Coalition (StPC) was hosted in Nadi, Fiji from July 29th to the 2nd of August 2024.

With natural disasters on the rise, the retreat highlighted the essential need for diverse women's voices to be both heard and acted upon.

“We are organizing for climate justice. We are reflecting on how to strengthen our network and will continue to build our capacity for climate action and advocacy.” Said Melvine Giobun, StPC’s Bougainville National Hub Coordinator.

The retreat was supported by Home Planet and it gathered young women representatives from StPC’s National Hubs, including Bougainville Women’s Federation (BWF) representative Melvine Giobun and a young women rep under BWF Associates Grace Viore.

''We are facing the brunt of the climate crisis, but we are confident in our strength to build resilient communities together" Said Grace Viore.

This event provided an opportunity to reflect on the past three years of the Young Women and Climate Change Programme and to explore ways to strengthen the programme while identifying new avenues for engagement and collaboration.

A key component of the retreat was an inter-generational dialogue, which brought together different perspectives and experiences in advocacy.

For Grace Viore, one of BWF’s Young Associates, the retreat was a chance to deepen her understanding of climate advocacy and the importance of collaborative action. The insights gained will contribute to BWF’s ongoing efforts to empower young women in Bougainville and beyond.

The retreat has set a powerful precedent for collective and informed climate action, paving the way for enhanced advocacy and collaboration in the Pacific region. Bougainville Women’s Federation is proud to be a part of this transformative movement and remains committed to leading efforts in climate justice and community resilience.
